Mortgage Underwriter

The Underwriter position is responsible for maintaining a thorough working knowledge of and ability to analyze credit reports, income documentation, assets, liabilities, property appraisals, and title reports. This position will assist in ensuring that loans meet company standards for sale into secondary market. In addition, the Underwriter position will identify, analyze and balance transactional, borrower and property related risks and offsets to arrive at a loan decision of approval, suspense, counter offer or denial. In addition, the Underwriter position is responsible for providing general management, leadership and support for the people and daily processes related to the Residential Real Estate and Consumer loan processing department.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze loan applicants’ credit histories, financial statements, and other financial information to make quality decisions on loans.
  • Interpret and analyze complex tax returns and financial documents.
  • Completed Underwriting checklist in every file, with any conditions presented in a clear, specific and uncomplicated format and limited to items relating to approval only.
  • Demonstrate ability to comprehend program changes and new program guidelines. Implement new changes in daily production immediately with minimal error rate.
  • Maintain knowledge of available loan products, program functionality, and investor guidelines.
  • Utilize DO, LP and GUS underwriting systems.
  • Directs and manages the Residential Real Estate loan processing department by overseeing the day-to-day activities of the personnel, monitoring product delivery and quality of activities.


Essential Qualifications and Requirements:
Minimum 5 years of progressive underwriting experience required. FHA DE and VA SAR certifications required.  2 years management experience preferred. Experience with AUS (LP/DO/GUS) and knowledge of mortgage insurance preferred. Understanding of secondary market guidelines (FNMA/FHLMC/FHA/USDA/ VA) required. In addition, must have a strong understanding of mortgage process flow of 1-4 family, condo and coop from processing to closing. A high level of proficiency with mortgage loan processing desired. Experience with Encompass loan processing software desirable. Knowledgeable in lending compliance regulations required.
