Type Three Invasion

By Toby Erkson

Per Lingren spent the week before and after the Invasion at my place. Unfortunately, I had to work during that time so I couldn't show our Norwegian Invasioner much of the area but I was able to have a couple of my friends take him out and show him around. Here he is raising the rear end of my baby in preparation for the Invasion.

Here is Per trying an American beer while Tommy Fat Cheeks waits patiently for a cheek scratchin'.

Day 1: Friday

The Oregon contingent lined up and ready to invade!

Per gets a feel for driving my baby while Cindy and I exchange shots.

Jacob looses his autotranny flex plate just outside of Pendelton. Martin is kind enough to drive his Fasty and let the injured Square use the tow.

After Jacob's Squareback whips itself and the truck towing it 180° and ends up off the side of the road. ODOT shows up to see what happened (and the police showed up a few minutes later).

Ken and I wait for the crew to unbolt the Square's CV joints and turn it around. It took them about two beers to finally get back on the road.

Day 2: Saturday

The next day the "prom-queens" wash their rides at a children's car wash. The kids made out pretty good; we paid them $3 and we washed our own cars while they watched and asked a bunch of questions. Funny looking cars with their engine in the back can create quite a few.

Keith Park talks about the front beam that got away Keith's tech session on front beams while Ken (seated with water bottle) panics more and more about his beam.

Brooke's sweet ride.

Photo opportunity in Nyssa (caravan after day 1 show). 22 cars total!

Day 3: Sunday

Campsite for most of us.

Raul taking full advantage of the sleeping space available in his Square.

Darned squirrels partied last night and didn't clean up!

Many volks were leaving this day in the afternoon. Here, Maddy helps Peter break camp.

Per's favorite sign.

Eagle-eye Per spots a treasure behind the Chevron gas station…

Dave Hall can't bare to watch the Venetian blind install

Russ and Jim A. sit patiently in the shade while John Jarenson gives his tech session on composites. The goober pointing at the table is none other than Brian Fye, the master-mind behind the T3 Invasion!

I think the only reason Raul came to the Invasion was to catch up on some long-lost sleep

Seeing if my Bosch fuel injection tester works, using Lawrence's Square as a guinea pig. How the unit is interfaced…

…and what it looks like during operation.

Day 4: Monday

Headed home with Brian and Shannon's dog, Monk.

Brian S. givin' the dub luv. This is a strong, smooth ride!

Keith P. learning that the Darkside can have cool power, comfortable riding and smooth handling (Keith also drove my car earlier).

Per in my baby while I enjoy Brian's Fasty.

During our caravan towards home, with the T3's mixed within traffic, I was transported back to my childhood days when air-cooled Volkswagens were more prevalent. There were moments when I was swept up in nostalgia and the many trips our family made…"I have to go to the bathroom!" and "Are we there yet?" whispered in the air that enveloped our air-cooled time-machines.

This picture explains what mere words cannot: What driving a Volkswagen is all about.

Gathering for the BBQ at my place.

Grill master Peter Parker in action!

"Hey Dad, quit bogartin' the brew!"

Brooke and Martin explaining to Martin's wife about the Butt, er, Bus Pilots incident. Look at Per, that boy just can't get enough American beer

Keith changing his Square's oil at Toby's Garage. What a sleeper-car it is, a DARKSIDER in sheep's clothing
